Dollos
In 1963 a storm tore sixty percent of the armour blocks off the East London breakwater. The harbour engineer wanted a shape that could absorb the sea rather than resist it. His draughtsman went home for lunch, cut up his wife's broomstick, and nailed three pieces into an H with one leg turned through ninety degrees.
The carpenter who made the first model asked what he was meant to do with the dolos, "the knucklebone". The name stuck.
Cast in solid terrazzo, faceted by hand, the Dolos brings that shape indoors. It holds a door, anchors a shelf of books, or simply sits. Never patented, given freely to the world, and still lining coastlines from Table Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.
Material: Cast terrazzo
